Floriano, a young philosopher who arrives from Zaragoza to escape an affair, feigns madness in order to be committed to the asylum for the insane in Valencia. There he meets Erífila, who has also been committed after being found half-naked and screaming at the hospital gates. Both are forced to feign madness in order to escape their respective troubles. This game of feigned identities sets off a plot of misunderstandings and stirs madness in other characters within the hospital itself, in this comedy governed by eroticism, passion and folly.
