The show

Bernarda is an invisible character, an immaterial authority, in this work by Taiat Dansa. Its creators, Meritxell Barberá & Inma García, conceal the mother in order to observe her five daughters closely and to inhabit their confinement, their anguish and their conflicts. The five sisters watch over (and are watched over by) one another, observe (and are observed by) one another, and dance every action in the light of moral expectations. It is precisely this subtle form of control that gives the piece its oppressive intensity. Femininity is staged as a set of rules that structure practice, the body and the affections in a coerced manner, with resistance and violence. The two creators perform one of the rawest classics of our literature, dancing the confinement of Bernarda’s five daughters.

In the last literary work Lorca left us, a masterpiece of world literature, the poet addresses a drama of passion that lays bare the disenchantment of a cursed era, a time of immense repression and of absolute domination over women.

After Taiat Dansa’s Judith, Meritxell & Inma now summon these five women, who take us on a journey through such universal themes as oppression, family tensions, social criticism and the struggle for freedom and identity.
